Hi everyone sorry for asking for your help yet again.
Could you please let me know your thoughts on feeding via A Ryles tube? I have had consultants wanting to over ride our policy that states catagorically this shhould not be done? Do you have the sdame problems and how have you dealt with them?

secondly a discussion raised the question how long should a patient be fasted for following a RIG insertion as there seems to be little evidence and possibly what we are doing is tradition and maybe not evidential?
what do you do and do you have any evidence to back this up

We do not advocate feeding via a Ryles tube, they are not licensed for that purpose and would struggle to connect now ENFit connections. We tend to use a larger bore feed and drain tube if drainage is still an issue.

We are just amending our policy to advocate fasting for 4 hours post gastrostomy insertion as per NICE guidance.

Hi Linda
We do 4 hours for fasting post RIG – unless patient’s condition says otherwise.
All patients who have a RIG/PEG have to be seen by a dr of the referring team and checked for signs of displacement.

I agree with Charlie – we do not advocate feeding via Ryles for reasons cited, but it can be an uphill struggle at times!

Our standard is Ryles for drainage but change to fine bore for feeding.
Nothing for 6 hrs post RIG procedure

We have fed 4 hours post RIG for more than 10 years with no problems BUT a new radiologist is now insistent we wait for 24 hours!!! It is delaying feeding and increasing in patient stays. And there is no evidence to support it either. Its how he was trained a,nd he won’t budge!

Not only that but they now have barium and a 12 hour starve beforehand. Madness.
