Hello,
Can anyone advise me please whether there is a national database where hospitals can opt to submit data for numbers of CVC-related blood stream infections in PN patients?
I would like to know how our BSI rates compare nationally.

I think this would be a great idea and have suggested similar in the past. also how does everyone ‘measure’ a BSI?

Thanks Tracy,
I thought you might be the one to respond to this as I recall we have had conversations about it previously!
We have a new chief nurse for infection control and prevention in our Trust. I will try to find out from him what national data bases there are if any.
Currently here, I record all positive blood cultures in patient receiving PN via a CVC. I have developed a root cause analysis tool to investigate BSI which I use on each one. I use the Matching Michigan criteria to determine whether it is line-suspected, line associated or line related. Following the launch of the RCA, plus a lot of other interventions around training, I have made a 50% reduction in the number of BSI so far this year compared to last year using BSI per 1000 days PN.
Still lots more to do to improve our care though.
I will let you know if I find out any more around national recording.

Hi Maggie

Yes I also use MM tool as unable to find anything else which I find quite astounding.
I do find the terms line-suspected, line associated or line related confusing?? maybe its just me.
I have suggested a league table in the past which may encourage/ support sharing of best practice and strategies to reduce BSI, ours have improved but its a matter of constantly keeping the finger on the pulse and hard slog. we have recently set up a vascular working group to address staff training and competencies, guidelines etc. etc.

50% reduction. That sounds very positive. Take hope from it and would be very interested in a national database too.
