Member to raise essential funds for MND Association

Sean has been a Home Enteral Feed (HEF) Dietitian in Sheffield since 2004 visiting patients with a variety of diagnoses feeding at home via  enteral feeding tubes. It is evident that  HEF has a wide ranging social, physical and psychological impact on patients and their families, that goes well beyond the symptoms of the clinical condition. Through working and listening to his patient’s day to day challenges as a result of living with HEF and having an awareness of the evidence base,  he may be tempted to say he understands what it means to feed through a tube, but does he?

To gain a small insight into the trials and tribulations patients experience when living at home on enteral feeding, Sean plans to have a naso-gastric tube placed on Monday 18th January 2016, and will become nil by mouth for a week. He will bolus feed for a few days, followed by feeding via a pump and ending with a couple of days administering blended diet (where he is convinced this will probably block the tube and have to have it removed).

Sean intends to continue working, exercising and attending social occasions throughout this week and will keep a video diary of the tube placement, obtaining gastric aspirates, feeding and any other insights which he will share on a Facebook fund raising page he has set up to record his progress. Sean is raising money for the South Yorkshire branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MND).  Sean says ”MND is a condition I have both a clinical and personal interest in. In 1992 my Grandad, Fred, died following being diagnosed with MND. Though I did not at the time appreciate the gravity of what he was going through, his deterioration as a result of this debilitating disease has stuck with me”. Now through his clinical role he has witnessed the vital support the MND Association charity provides to patients and their families to manage the holistic impact of the condition.

Followed by the week on naso-gastric feeding, Sean is going to run the Paris marathon on April 3rd 2016.
